Picture you’re staying in a hotel and want to order a burger.


If you know the direct line to room service, you pick up the phone, place your order, and a burger shows up at your door a little while later. You knew exactly who to call and exactly what you'd get. That's a direct request with a predictable outcome.


Now, picture you are a different guest. One that doesn't have any direct extensions. So instead you call the concierge and simply describe what you need. The concierge figures out whether that means room service, housekeeping, or the front desk, and routes the request accordingly. You as the guest never need to understand how the hotel is organized. The concierge handles that routing and the majority of the time you get to the right extension.


Neither approach is inherently right or wrong, however there is a fundamental difference in the workflow.


This analogy is a useful way to think about APIs and Model Context Protocol, or MCP. Having quickly become one of the more talked about ideas in enterprise AI, we are now regularly hearing announcements around growing MCP support, often describing MCP as the next advancement in how AI will interact with connected technology.


These advancements are genuinely an exciting development, yet it has also created a fair amount of confusion. One question in particular continues to surface: will MCP replace APIs?


The short answer is no. The longer answer is that APIs and MCP are built to solve different problems, and understanding where each one fits is becoming important as more organizations bring AI into how they manage enterprise technology.


At NetSpeek, we built our platform to operate AV, unified communications, networking, and workplace technology. The platform is built to check room readiness, troubleshoot problems, and handle administrative tasks across thousands of devices. In many cases, NetSpeek’s platform talks directly to those devices through APIs, either the device's own API or the API exposed through the manufacturer's cloud platform. That's not because we're skeptical of new technology. It's because running day-to-day tasks within critical infrastructure requires a level of operational consistency that today can only be delivered through APIs.


APIs were built for precision

APIs have been quietly running enterprise software for decades. Most people never see them, but they're behind almost everything. When a monitoring platform checks whether a device is still online, when someone updates a configuration remotely, or when a piece of software pulls diagnostics off a switch, there's very likely an API doing the work.


An API is a lot like that direct phone call to room service. You know exactly who you're reaching. You know exactly what you're asking for. And you can count on getting the same result every time you ask.


That reliability is the whole point. When a user needs to reboot a conferencing camera, check the status of a display, compare a room's setup against how it's supposed to be configured, or pull diagnostics from a network switch, a direct API call gives a consistent, repeatable answer. When you're responsible for infrastructure that a business actually depends on, that kind of consistency isn't simply nice to have - it's the baseline.


MCP is solving a different problem

MCP takes a different approach entirely. Instead of asking every AI application to individually learn hundreds of different vendor APIs, MCP gives AI a common way to discover what tools exist and how to use them.


Back to the hotel: MCP is the concierge. Instead of memorizing every extension in the building, you describe what you're trying to get done, and the concierge figures out who can help.


In practice, an MCP server tells an AI system what tools are available to it, and the AI decides in the moment which one fits the task. That's a genuinely useful capability. It lowers the bar for connecting AI to existing software, and it makes it much easier to build conversational tools that can reach into enterprise systems without a developer wiring up every integration by hand.


It's an incredible step forward for a lot of use cases. Where it can become problematic however, is in mission critical situations where accuracy and consistency are an operational necessity.


Why “figuring it out” isn't always good enough

Here's the part that matters most for anyone running critical technology, and it comes down to a word that sounds technical but is actually pretty simple once you unpack it: determinism.


A deterministic system gives you the same output every time you give it the same input. A non-deterministic one might not. And by design, the reasoning an AI model does when it's deciding which MCP tool to call, and how to call it, is non-deterministic. The model is interpreting your request in the moment and choosing a path based on probability, not a fixed rulebook. Most of the time that works out fine. Occasionally it doesn't, and there's no way to know in advance which time it'll be.


For a question like “which conference rooms had the most issues this month,” that's a reasonable trade-off. There are several valid ways to arrive at a good answer, and a little variability doesn't cost you much.


For a request like “reset the camera in Conference Room 12 before the executive meeting starts in five minutes,” or “validate every device in this room and restore it to standard configuration,” variability is exactly what you can't afford. Those aren't conversations. They're operational commands, and the system carrying them out needs to behave the same way every single time, not most of the time.


That's the core reason NetSpeek leverages APIs for the actions that actually touch your environment. The AI does the reasoning. The API carries out the action deterministically. Each does the part it's actually good at, and with a human-in-the-loop at the appropriate time, you can deliver an operational platform you can trust to do exactly what you asked, every time.


Why this matters right now

More products across the AV and UC space are shipping AI capabilities this year, and a growing number of manufacturers are adding MCP support to their own platforms. That's a good thing. It's going to make it easier to connect AI tools to the systems already running in the field, and it will keep expanding what conversational AI can do inside enterprise environments.


But being able to reach more tools isn't the same thing as being trustworthy with them. AI earns its keep when it consistently produces the right outcome, not just when it has access to more places it could theoretically go. For AI that's actually operating infrastructure, that usually means pairing intelligent reasoning with deterministic execution rather than picking one over the other.


Technology conversations have a habit of turning into an either-or debate. APIs or MCP. Traditional software or AI. Automation or people.


In practice, the strongest enterprise platforms rarely pick a single lane. They combine approaches and use whichever one fits the problem in front of them, and we believe that's exactly where enterprise AI is headed.


APIs will keep providing the precision and reliability that operational execution requires. MCP will keep making it easier for AI to discover and use the tools already sitting inside your environment. 


The future of enterprise AI won't be defined by any single protocol. It will be defined by choosing the right interface for the right problem, every time.
